PREVENTING SUMMER LEARNING LOSS

WHAT IS SUMMER LEARNING LOSS? 

  • When students don’t practice academic skills over the summer, they don’t always retain what they’ve learned during the previous school year. 

  • On average, students lose approximately two months of learning in math skills over the summer break. 

  • Students from lower socio-economic backgrounds also lose an average of two months in reading achievement over the summer. 

  • Approximately two-thirds of the achievement gap for lower socio-economic 

  • 9th graders can be attributed to summer learning loss. 

  • By the end of fifth grade, disadvantaged children are nearly three grade levels.
